Is it really influence if you're just stealing wholesale?

We're talking about Akira Kurosawa's 1961 period drama/action film Yojimbo on this week's Lost in Criterion. We end up talking about it's legion of remakes. But beyond being so plagiaristicly "inspirational", the film also changed a lot of the grammar of action movies. Toshiro Mifune stars in this one, and continues to be the best actor of the 20th century, and has to be one of the most feature performers in the Criterion Collection. Since it's a Japanese period piece it's probably a given by this point that we asked Donovan Hill to join us for the episode. He'll be back next week as well for Sanjuro. Happy New Year! Thanks for listening.
