In this week's Lost in Criterion we're diving into Herk Harvey's indie horror classic and influential Carnival of Souls (1962) and it's inconsistent use of imagery and its dedication to making a film just to showcase various really cool places the filmmakers knew about. I'm just being cynical here, but Pat really does hate it. Candace Hilligoss is great though! She should have been in more things.
Carnival of Souls is definitely more than the sum of it's problems. I'd even recommend it to my zombie-film loving friends -- it's an obvious influence on Night of the Living Dead. It's interesting in a lot of ways, especially for a shoestring budget indie shot by a team not normally does industrial and educational films. Give it a watch, and give Lost in Criterion a listen.
