This week Lost in Criterion is headed to "a vast empire that had built its foundation on ignorance, violence, fear, and oppression", or so the title cards claim in Josef von Sternberg's 1934 The Scarlet Empress, starring Marlene Dietrich as Catherine the Great in a film that Pat was surprised is in English. Made just before the Hays Code went into effect, von Sternberg walks right up to the line and jumps over.
