John Schlesinger's Billy Liar (1963), an adaptation of Keith Waterhouse's novel (itself more than a bit of a rip-off of James Thurber's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"), is the story of a young many who fancies himself a writer but constantly finds excuses and distractions to keep himself from his claimed art.
