This week we’re Rounding Up three products from the Empire Bottling Works in Bristol, Rhode Island. Empire’s is a pretty small operation with seemingly no first party web presence, but they’ve been in business since 1930 making a variety of root beers and sodas from spring water and pure cane sugar.
Empire Root Beer
Good, solid middle of the road root beer. Excellent balance of classic root beer flavor: not too sweet, a little on the sassafras side, but still some good vanilla.
Olde Rhode Island Molasses Root Beer
Celebrating the colony founded from the last Baptist to advocate for the separation of church and state it’s fitting that this should have a deeper flavor than it’s more normal brother. You can tell it uses molasses as the caramels are deeper than in the regular root beer. Also I’d wager that there’s a little bit of anise in here. A little more bite to it as well.
Like a fine Malört, Spruce Beer should only be drunk by the uninitiated. Pairs well with Black Jack Gum and self-hatred. This stuff tastes like carbonated Vicks VapoRub. There is a bit of citrus here, and its effervescence is somewhat refreshing. But there’s just no getting around the pine tar flavor.
Rate: 0, because -9000 seems like overkill.
