This week we’re focusing on roots beer with a little something extra in them, but unlike some of the gourmets we’ve seen before these ones want to loudly proclaim what they’re going for.
Anchor Ginger Root Beer
Orca Beverages, Mukilteo
Another of Orca’s legacy brands that probably existed before Orca found them but there’s just no real information on it.
The ginger is noticeable but mild. This is definitely a ginger root beer and not a ginger beer. It’s creamy with just a little vanilla in there as well.
Dang! That’s Good Butterscotch Root Beer
Imperial Flavors Beverages, Milwaukee, WI
We talked about Dang! way back in episode five, so I won’t bore you with details on the company.
Well, it tastes like Butterscotch, but almost entirely unlike root beer. There may be a little sassafras way down in there, but this is all sweet and buttery. As such it’s a delicious creamy drink, not unlike a good cream soda.
Cicero Beverage Co. Salted Caramel Root Beer
CBC Sales Inc., Chicago, IL.
As we’ve seen in two episodes already, Chicago’s got a lot of great root beers. This salted caramel root beer has won a good deal of awards in the last few years., which isn’t that surprising considering how popular “salted caramel” is as a flavor right now.
It achieves the salted caramel it’s looking for, with no root beer at all. There’s salt. There’s dark sugars. There carbonation. That’s about it. Dang! at least had something like root beer in it’s bones, this is not a root beer. Still, as a salty caramel soda, it's not terrible.
