D.A. Pennebaker takes us inside the first annual Monterey Pop Festival, the organizers of which hoped to prove that Rock music was just as much art as Jazz and Folk, and provides a perfect picture of an era about to explode: the festival introduced The Who and Ravi Shankar to America, Jimi Hendrix back to America, Otis Redding to white America, and Janis Joplin to the world. This week Lost in Criterion gets lost in the Summer of Love as we explore the Complete Monterey Pop Festival box set: Monterey Pop (1967), Jimi Plays Monterey (1986), and Shake! Otis at Monterey (1986).
