We've seen enough coming-of-age films with Lost in Criterion that I should probably make genre tags. I should probably make genre tags anyway. I'm not sure what it says about me that I like stories about depressing childhoods so much.
My Life as a Dog (1985) put Lasse Hallström on the map as a film director, though he'd already made a name for himself directing so, so, so many ABBA music videos. He'd go one to make What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat, and other great Oscar-baity films in the US that have never led to his winning an Oscar, at least for his directing. Which is sad, since he's pretty good at it. (He was nominated for this and The Cider House Rules).
Anyway, it's a great film! And we're talking about it on Lost in Criterion this week.
