Akira Kurosawa spent a decade dreaming about making Ran and it shows. It’s well crafted and deliberate (mostly), but also vivid and delirious — something that had become an obsession. It’s beautiful. It’s brutal. And it’s accidentally Shakespeare. Apparently, Kurosawa was not thinking about King Lear when he wrote this, but someone pointed out the similarities and Kurosawa leaned into it. Great job!
