I recorded this episode of the Round Up just before moving nearly 3 years ago and only just now found cord to connect my camera to my computer. Great job, me!
This week we check another off my quest to drink a root beer from every state with one from Hawaii. It's good!
I've still got a lot of states to go, but I'm very close to a couple of bingos! A Vermont root beer would get me one from each state of New England which seems like it should be easy, and one from Nevada would give me a straight line from coast to coast. Make some suggestions!
But on to this week's ratings!
Capt'n Eli's Soda
Shipyard Brewing, Portland, Maine
Probably the only root beer with an official tie in graphic novel, Capt'n Eli kicks butt? At least in the comics. Dark and heady, it's very creamy vanilla. Tastes like a waitress on roller skates ought to bring it to you in mug.
Minhas Brewery, Monroe, Wisconsin
The Minhas family currently owns Blumer's brewery which is the second oldest brewery in the country according to them. I don't doubt that. The nose on this is very sweet and fruity, but with an undernote of hops. The flavor is rather unlike root beer, fruity and syrupy, tart but still somehow medcine-y. Perhaps the weirdest thing is that it's still quite palatable.
Rating as a root beer: 1
Rating as a soda: 4
Waialua Root Beer
Waialua Soda Works, Waialua, Hawaii
Locally sourced ingredients feed this Hawaiian root beer. The birch/wintergreen in this is almost pepperminty, like a wintergreen lifesaver more than birch, but it's creamy and vanilla-y with a classic draft root beer smell and principal flavor.
