It’s time for rebellion.
The samurai mythos is a cultural myth that like similar myths in the west — The Wild West, The Noble Savage — has specific use in service of consolidated state power. We talked extensively about deconstructing those national myths with out last Kobayashi film, Harakiri, but for the next month Criterion is serving us up the Rebel Samurai boxset, four films from the 1960’s that take different paths in tearing down the idols of the past. Donovan H. joins us for the entire month, starting with Samurai Rebellion.
We get rebellious with Samurai Rebellion in this week's Lost in Criterion. Listen to it on LostInCriterion.com or iTunes! While you're at it, maybe like us on Facebook? Or consider supporting us through Patreon. We'd appreciate it.
