It’s clear that Eric Rohmer doesn’t want us to like the male narrators/leads of his Six Moral Tales, but it does seem like he wants us to feel conflicted about them, and since each of them is toxic in a unique way Pat and I can pretty easily write them and their morality off.
Still we’ve signed on to talk about the Criterion Collection in order, and the Collection has served us these six films, starting with the appetizer of The Bakery Girl of Monceau. The films get better from here, or at least more interesting. Barbet Schroeder stars as not the worst guy in the series and the film is gloriously short. I guess that makes it #5 on the ranked list at worst.
We talk about jerks and baked goods on this week’s Lost in Criterion with The Bakery Girl of Monceau. Listen on LostInCriterion.com, Spotify, iTunes, or anywhere you like to get podcasts. While you're at it, like us on Facebook or support us on Patreon.
